Mulch
The gardening experts disagree about many of the details, but they all seem to agree on mulch. Four to six inches over a half acre of flower beds at three dollars a two cubic foot bag... It doesn't take Jethro Bodine to cypher that that's not going to work. Fortunately modern tree farming methods leave behind enough scraps to last many years.
Thirty minutes with a pitchfork yields a two ton load.
And the little dog laughed to see such sport.
